About

I am an artist interested in human relationships and how they are shaped by societal norms. As a queer man who has recovered from a strict Catholic upbringing and a series of heteronormative, monogamous relationships, I’m particularly drawn to challenging the norms and power structures that dictate how we are expected to live, love, and attain happiness.

Oil painting is my primary medium, though I am also exploring other forms of expression such as sculpture, printmaking, drawing, moving image and installation art. I am currently investigating the tension between my natural analytical mind - formed through years of scientific practice - and the emotional expression I seek in my artwork. My influences include contemporary artists such as Doron Langberg, Kylie Manning and Jenny Saville, alongside a deep admiration for the old masters, including Caravaggio, Michelangelo and Rembrandt.

I am currently developing a body of work that probes ideas around worship - not solely religious - but also what humanity chooses to set on pedestals or to be neglected. A recent double-sided oil painting of a fellow Scottish recovered Catholic, who is a member of London’s gay fetish community, was shown at the NPG Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award 2025.
